Madhavaram municipality is situated hear by chennai with the extent of 17.4 sq.km.In G.O Ms 2394 RDRLA dt 19.11.1970 this panchayat was constituted into 3rd grade township, Upgraded to 2nd grade municipality vide G.O M.S.114 Municipal Administration and Water supply department dt 31.05.1994 and further upgraded from 2nd Grade Municipality to 1st Grade Municipality w.e.f 22.05.1998. As per G.O (MS) No 238 dt. 2.12.2008 Madhavaram Municipality is upgraded as Special Grade Municipality. There are 30 wards in this municipality with population of 85140 as per 2001 census.There are eight buses that have been covering Madhavaram with other parts for the city . they are 38F,38G,38H, 48A,48B,56A,58W,170A

Agarsan College
The Mission and Vision of philanthropic Agarwal Community of Chennai for providing "higher education for needy" led to the starting of the college. "Agarwal Relief and Educational Trust" purchased 8 acres of land surrounded by mango groves at Madhavaram, on the periphery of the city to establish and manage an Arts and Science College. Consequently the Government of Tamilnadu has granted permission to start the college as per G.O.No.280 dated 6.7.2000. The non-profit motive Self-financing Co-educational Institution was started during 2000-2001 with three courses : i) B.Com. ii) B.C.A. iii) B.Sc.(Comp.Sci.) at the temporary site Shri Narmathadevi J. Agarwal Vivekananda Vidyalaya, M.K.B. Nagar, Vyasarpadi and University of Madras granted affiliation for these courses as per Registrar's letter No.A1(GT)2000-2001/2. 164 dated 6-8-2000.
The permanent building was built within a short span of eight months at Madhavaram with all infrastructural facilities with spacious class hall, fully air-conditioned and well furnished Computer Laboratory, well equipped Library, playground, etc. The College is established in an idyllic location away from the buzzle and dim of city but within the bounds of Chennai Metropolis. The establishment of the college in this locality fulfills the need of the people of this area and surrounding localities.
At a colourful ceremony, Kanchi Pontiff Shri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal inaugurated the college building by lighting the Kuthuvilakku and offered blessings for the growth of the institution. An idol of 'Sri Varadha Vinayagar' has been installed at the Mandabam in the main entrance of the building and a temple of Shiva is being built in the campus, so that our students would have the provisions for worshiping and learning in the same place which are the basic requisites for the developement of personality of students.
There is a Kasi Viswanathar Temple in Madhavaram which was believed to be 1300 years old. Also a Big Vishnu Temple is present here which has a huge Hanuman statue in a welcoming pose.
Based on the recommendation of the Royal Commission on Agriculture, the college was upgraded to impart degree in veterinary science. Although the college was the fourth veterinary institution to be started in India, it was first veterinary college in the country to be affiliated to a university, the University of Madras in 1935 and the Bachelor of Veterinary Science (B.V.Sc.) degree course was started in 1936. The University of Madras also recognized the college as a centre for postgraduate education. In 1969, the college was made as the Directorate of Veterinary Education and Research. The college was then academically affiliated to Tamilnadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in 1974 and became a constituent unit of TNAU in 1976. To meet the demand of veterinary education and research, a second veterinary college was started in Namakkal in the year 1985.
