Mogappair is a fast-developing residential neighborhood in western Chennai, India. This suburb located west of the Jawaharlal Nehru Road (Inner Ring Road) is part of the Ambattur Municipality. There are industrial estates to the north and west namely Padi, Mannurpet and Ambattur.

  The abundance of highly ranked schools, specialized hospitals andrecent influx of IT offices in the Industrial Estates have allcatapulted Mogappair into a strategic location for business activities.The reasonable rent conditions make this a favourite spot for aviationcrew members, patients visiting the heart specialty hospitals andemployees in the IT field.

       The Mangal Lake in the northern part of Mogappair was heavilycontaminated by the effluents from the adjoining Ambattur Industrialestate. Today, there has been reforms taken by Neer Exnora to protect and beautify this lake[A few decades ago Mogappair was only a small village, and a part ofwhich is still intact in the south-western part of Mogappair.

  • Understanding & awareness for change:sensitizing communities, schools, Panchayats, government bodies andother stakeholders to encourage a change within policy and civilsociety that allows those with mental illness to live lives of theirchoosing in dignity and respect.

Whenthe Banyan exceeded its capacity for residential housing at itsAdaikalam Centre located at Mogappair, the idea of Project Dial 100 ?the Mental Health Helpline was conceived and it marked the start of aunique collaborative effort between The Banyan, the Chennai city Policeand the Indian Institute of Mental Health. Emergency and distress callsregarding mentally ill and homeless people that are made on Dial 100are routed by the Chennai city Police to The Banyan which helps rescueand admit the patients to the IMH round the clock ? both male andfemale patients in this case.
